GS Varsity Math Team 2020 Record: 13-3
Results (PL)
Led by Captains Ellen Zhang '21, Justin Liu '21, and Forest Ho-Chen '22, along with forward Jason Liu '22 and center back Wilson Chen '23, the Varsity Math team finished the Philly League season as Philly League Champions (and Friends League Champions) with a 7-2 record including 2 shutouts (much harder than in most sports), marking the second time that GSVMT has won the Philly League (and there had only been two tournaments). Additionally, for the second year in a row, George School also had the individual champion, Forest Ho-Chen '22 (2019: Bom Jindanuwat '20). Justin Liu '21 was ranked 3rd, Wilson Chen '23 was ranked 4th, and Ellen Zhang '21 was ranked 6th.
Results (MM)
At the end of the Math Madness tournament, GSVMT was ranked 26th nationally and first in Pennsylvania. GSVMT also beat every team in states such as New York, North Carolina, Georgia (where the 2021 champion was from), and Ohio, totaling 301 electoral votes in 2020, which is 5 fewer than Biden, 69 more than Trump, and 301 more than West. Out of the 9 people with perfect scores in the ranked rounds, Forest Ho-Chen '22 was ranked 7th nationally (5th with DQs. The College Preparatory School had two people in 5th and 6th with 100% and 6 seconds away from each other, but both were apparently disqualified. They lost their next match against Archbishop Mitty by a lot, apparently only getting 23 points, after getting multiple perfect scores in a row. Looking back from the 2021 season, something seems very familiar about this.). Justin Liu '21 was ranked in the top 100, and Ellen Zhang '21 was ranked in the top 150.
September 16, Vs Westtown (PL)
A very exciting season opener for the GS Varsity Math Team, beating Westtown 34-31/40. This is despite many of our best players not showing up. There were two perfect scores by Forest Ho-Chen '22 and Justin Liu '21, and Linglong Dai '23 had a great performance.
September 23, Vs Temp Philly School (PL)
GS Varsity Math got our second win and first shutout in our second matchup, winning 33-0/35 with perfect scores from Forest Ho-Chen '22, Justin Liu '21, and Wilson Chen '23. We did not face Baldwin (though they were still playing) this season, so this was the replacement match.
September 30, Vs Haverford (PL)
George School loses to Haverford 33-24/40. People didn't show up to this match. Why does this sound similar to the 2021 match? Perhaps in 2022, we will learn that people need to show up. Good performance by Ellen Zhang '21.
October 7, Vs Malvern Prep (PL)
George School claps back and gets our second shutout of the 2020 season, beating Malvern Prep 35-15/35. Perfect scores from Forest Ho-Chen '22, Justin Liu '21, Ellen Zhang '21, Jason Liu '22, and Ian Hopkins '22. This win put us in first place in both individual and team categories. In a way, this match is similar to the 2019 win over Westtown, and still a bit similar to the 2021 win over Westtown, as both put GSVMT in first place in both categories.
October 8, Vs Whitfield (MM)
George School has a great performance in our Math Madness Season Opener with three perfect scores, winning 38-20/40. Perfect scores by Forest Ho-Chen '22, Justin Liu '21, and Tommy Wang '21.
October 14, Vs Agnes Irwin (PL)
GSVMT usually doesn't do that well against Agnes Irwin. There was one question that no one solved, but we won the match 29-14/35. Good performance by Ellen Zhang '21.
October 15, Vs Ladue Horton Watkins (MM)
This is probably the most exciting Varsity Math match that GSVMT has experienced. Ladue got off to a strong start, but GSVMT clapped back from a 10+ point deficit to win 39-37/40. Ladue ended up being one of the top teams in the tournament. Perfect scores from Forest Ho-Chen '22, Justin Liu '21, Ellen Zhang '21, and Jimmy Ding '23.
October 21, Vs Penn Charter (PL)
GS wins 31-13/40, with Forest Ho-Chen '22 having a perfect score and Jimmy Ding '23 having a good performance. GSVMT stayed in first place in both categories despite the suboptimal performance.
October 22, Vs St. Margaret's Episcopal (MM)
The George School Varsity Math Team wins 39-20, with perfect scores from Forest Ho-Chen '22, Justin Liu '21, Ellen Zhang '21, and Jason Liu '22, good performance by Wilson Chen '23.
October 28, Vs Hill (PL)
GS loses 30-25/40. Honestly not sure what happened here. This is why we were a bit worried about facing Hill in 2021. Good performance by Justin Liu '21.
October 29, Vs San Dimas (MM)
GS beats San Dimas 37-37/40 on time, with perfect scores from Forest Ho-Chen '22, Justin Liu '21, and Ellen Zhang '21 and a notable great performance by Jimmy Ding '23.
November 4, Vs Episcopal (PL)
GSVMT beats Episcopal 28-18/35. GSVMT did not know that this was the last match counted to the Philly League standings and that the next match was just the FSL championship match. Perfect score by Justin Liu '21 to get third place, and Forest Ho-Chen '22 did well enough to secure the Philly League individual championship. Wilson Chen '23 got fourth place and Ellen Zhang '21 got sixth place. (Gary Gao '21 from Haverford was second place and Tiffany Wang '22 from Hill was fifth place.)
Additionally, George School's performance was good enough to win the Philly League for the second year in a row. Haverford (2nd or 3rd), Hill (3rd or 2nd), and Episcopal (4th) were the other teams in the top half. (Note: Episcopal's perspective is linked below. Episcopal was ranked first after the season opener, so their win over Agnes Irwin should probably be 39-22, not 29-22.)
November 5, Vs Half Hollow Hills School West (MM)
GS wins 37-22/40, with perfect scores from Forest Ho-Chen '22 and Justin Liu '21, with a good performance by Tommy Wang '21. GSVMT was apparently ranked 27th after this match, with Forest Ho-Chen '22 and Justin Liu '21 ranked high on the individual categories. GSVMT would play in the Division I bracket as in previous years.
November 11, Vs Westtown (PL)
GS wins 29-10/35 in our second win over Westtown of the year. Forest Ho-Chen '22 had a perfect score. With this win, George School had won the Friends League Championship. (It is unknown if George School won the FSL in 2019 as Westtown would have had to beat Shipley, which is possible, though very unlikely.) This concludes the 7-2 Philly League season. (There was no Varsity Tournament in 2020). This was the biggest victory over Westtown in the Fall 2020 season.
November 12, Vs Santa Cruz (MM)
GSVMT wins 31-16/40 in the first round of the Math Madness Bracket. Forest Ho-Chen '22 had a perfect score and was then ranked in the top 20. Linglong Dai '23 also had a good performance.
November 19, Vs High Tech (MM)
GSVMT loses 36-34/40 in the second bracket round of Math Madness. Justin Liu '21 and Forest Ho-Chen '22 had perfect scores. This match was very similar to the Ladue Horton Watkins matchup, but GS was not able to make the comeback after High Tech got 22 points in the first 9 minutes. High Tech would beat Harvard-Westlake and Ladue Horton Watkins before falling to The Harker School in the semifinals, who would lose to Adlai E. Stevenson in the finals. This was still a very good Math Madness performance for GSVMT, making it farther in the tournament than in 2019.
