A Historical Year for both Varsity Math and Varsity Science
Both the George School Varsity Math and Science Teams have had historical seasons this year. First of all, Varsity Math beat Westtown three times this Fall season (29-13/35, 6T-6/6, 6-5/6). If this is counted towards the Patterson Cup, which it honestly should be, then George School wins the Patterson Cup 14-13. Unfortunately, this is not counted for some very strange reason, so the Patterson Cup is tied 13-13. Additionally, in the Fall season, Jimmy Ding ‘23 set an unbreakable record in the Philly League, getting a 100% rating. This continues George School’s tradition of winning the Philly League individual competition as Bom Jindanuwat ‘20 and Forest Ho-Chen ‘22 won the past two Philly League individual championships. Jimmy’s record ties Forest’s record of best rating in a Fall season competition, as Forest had a 100% rating in the 2020 Math Madness tournament. The team won two championships in one season, which was the first since the start of the Philly League. The team also had the best record of a Varsity Math Team since the start of the Philly League: 17-2, and was undefeated in the Friends League for the second time.
At the same time as this, Varsity Science also made history this year. In addition to having two USNCO qualifiers for the second year in a row, GSVST captains Forest Ho-Chen ‘22 and Vinay Thulasiram ‘23, GSVST also had a student qualify for Team USA, which might be the first time a George School Student has qualified for Team USA, and certainly the first since the start of The MATES Era in 2018. Four-year Varsity Letter winner Forest Ho-Chen ‘22 represented the United States in the International Astronomy Olympiad and was ranked number 1 in the Northeast US. This means that he joins Bom Jindanuwat ‘20 (Thailand), Ta Somsirivattana ‘20 (Thailand), and Sophia Martinez ‘24 (Puerto Rico) as students to make national teams. Varsity Science also plans to host a competition for middle schools.
Finally, to top off this wonderful year of Varsity Academics, Varsity Math captain Wilson Chen ‘23 got a 144 on the AMC 12, got onto the first page of the AMC 12 B results, got 14 questions on the AIME, and had a 284 (144+140) USAMO index, all school records. He also tied for fifth place in the Lehigh Contest, which we can confirm is the highest for a George School student since the start of The MATES Era. In fact, records show that Wilson’s second place in his grade is the first time since 2014 that a George School student has gotten top 3 in their grade, when John Zhang ‘16, brother of Ellen Zhang and founder of the original GS Math Club, got third in the 10th grade. This record-breaking performance is accompanied by the Purple Comet victory in PA for the third year in a row and Varsity Science’s double qualification in the USNCO. Please congratulate both the Varsity Math and Varsity Science teams on their historical years! #GeorgeSchool #SayYestoGS #math #science #varsity #GoCougars #CountVarsityMathInThePattersonCup #TeamUSA #astronomy #PhSportsDigest #FSL_Athletics #SchoolRecord #STEM #MATES #education #legendsneverdie
