GSVMT beats Shipley 30-20/40 in the biggest upset in Varsity Math History
Pre-match: With George School star players Wilson Chen (C, 30), Jason Liu (pi^2), and Zach Spangler (The Smallest Counterexample To The Collatz Conjecture) missing, this is basically a guaranteed win for Shipley. Shipley won 34-33/35 when George School was at full power two years ago, and that was a significantly stronger team than what we have today. Forest Ho-Chen (C, 69) will not start today because of that match, and instead, Wade Wang (60) will be the starting striker. Regardless, George School will likely lose in a similar way that they lost to Haverford. Ignore any of the Agnes Irwin indirect matchup stuff or if Shipley has in fact lost to Hill, or maybe they beat Malvern Prep instead. Those are just theories anyway. They don't matter. GS is down so many players, so it will take an absolute miracle for George School to win.
Now, for some actual analysis. Forest Ho-Chen, despite being ranked number 7 in the nation last year and winning the individual championship last year, is not looking as good and is expected to not perform as well today. They will be starting at the Physics Engine instead of the striker and will try to influence the game there. Linglong Dai and Ian Hopkins were also major players in last year’s tournament for George School, and MC Gu was also there but is more known for their performance in JV. Meanwhile, although Shipley wasn’t in the tournament last year, Tikil Masak is known for beating Jason Liu and Ian Hopkins in the Lehigh Contest, so they are expected to get a lot of shots and goals here. Forest Ho-Chen, Linglong Dai, and Ian Hopkins, the three available George School captains, have said they need to play very strongly together and use some strategy. This match will be a test to see if George School does in fact have what it takes to win some more matches, as it will test their newer players, while it will be a test for Shipley to see what they can do at full power. Regardless, Shipley is highly favored to win.
Predictions:
GS: 25 (6+5+5+5+4)
SHP: 39 (8+8+8+8+7)
Commentary:
Scoring: 0, 0, 1
0: Three of George School’s star players don’t show up, Shipley up 0 to -3.
0: Shipley’s Yuri Tarded (C, 56) starts with the tap, passes it back to Tikil Masak (C, 9), tries to pass it back, but Yuki Wang (210) gets to it first and shoots, saved by Jason Alson (42), who almost accidentally throws it into the Shipley net.
0: Jason Alson (42) punts across midfield to DA-ni-ehl He-RIHD-vi (2), crosses it to the middle, and Yuri Tarded (C, 56) shoots, blocked by Ian Hopkins (C, 420).
0: Tikil Masak (C, 9) gets the rebound, passes it to Yuri Tarded (C, 56) and gets it back, shoots, saved by Ian Hopkins (C, 420).
Scoring: 0, 0.5, 1
1: Tikil Masak (C, 9) shoots, saved by Ian Hopkins (C, 420). Shipley winning 0.5 to -3.

2: Corner, Ally Fu (8/3) shoots, saved. Shipley up 1 to -2.
Scoring: 0, 1, 2
3: John Oldall (C, 22) shoots across the field, blocked by Linglong Dai (C, e+i*pi), who almost kicked the ball into the GS net. Quality shot by John Oldall (C, 22) though. Shipley is currently winning 2 to -2.
4: Yuki Wang (210) shoots, blocked by Likoba Sachaliko (51). Shipley up 2 to -1.
4: Corner kick, Jackson Yang (7) kicks it into the box, GS is using a “box strategy,” whatever that means, Yuki Wang (210) tries to shoot, but it hits the crossbar, then Wade Wang (60) shoots, very lucky block by Sarah Alson (21) because I don’t think Shipley is ready for that kind of 23rd-century strategy. Shipley up 2 to 0.
5: Ally Fu (8/3) shoots, saved by Jason Alson (42). Shipley up 2-1.
5: Linglong Dai (C, e+i*pi) shoots a free kick, blocked by Sarah Alson (21). GS ties the game at 2-2. Forest Ho-Chen (C, 69) subbed in for Wade Wang (60).
6: Jackson Yang (7) shoots, blocked by Likoba Sachaliko (51). GS up 3-2.
6: Forest Ho-Chen (C, 69) shoots, blocked by Jason Alson (42). GS up 4-2.
7: Corner, box strategy again, Linglong Dai (C, e+i*pi) gets it to MC Gu (10), back to Alex Chen (4), Alex shoots, saved by Jason Alson (42). GS up 5-2. This “box strategy” is surprisingly effective, but Shipley’s getting very lucky with these blocks and saves.
7: MC Gu (10) shoots, saved. GS up 6-2.
Scoring: 0, 0, 1
8: Handball, penalty kick for Shipley. Tikil Masak (C, 9) shoots,
SAVED BY IAN HOPKINS (C, 420). GS IS STILL WINNING 6-2.
Scoring: 0, 1, 2
9: Elie Koay (49) was fouled by Tikil Masak (C, 9) and subbed out due to an injury. Wade Wang (60) goes in at left forward. Free kick by Linglong Dai (C, e+i*pi) leads to another foul on Adam Weng (-9/2). No score change.
10: Forest Ho-Chen (C, 69) shoots a free kick, blocked by Likoba Sachaliko (51). GS up 7-2.
11: Navula Radio (3) shoots, saved by Ian Hopkins (C, 420). GS is winning 7-3.
12: Ally Fu (8/3) gets the ball from Ian Hopkins (C, 420), passed up to Camellia Zheng (85), crossed to Jackson Yang (7) who shoots, blocked by Alcon Lemon (41). GS up 8-3.
13: Another corner kick, GS using the “box strategy” again. Linglong Dai (C, e+i*pi) kicks, and it looks like it’s a third variation this time, Forest Ho-Chen (C, 69) fakes a kick, Camellia Zheng (85) shoots, saved. GS up 9-3.
14: Alex Chen (4) intercepts the punt, shoots, blocked, rebound by MC Gu (10), saved. GS up 10-3, then 11-3. “Halftime.”
Scoring: 1, 2, 3
15: Elie Koay (49) subbed in for Camellia Zheng (85).
15: GS with the tap, Forest Ho-Chen (69) taps it to Ally Fu (8/3), over to MC Gu (10), up to Yuki Wang (210), who shoots, but it is blocked by Sarah Alson (21). GS up 13-3.
16: Tikil Masak (C, 9) shoots a free-kick, but it is saved by Ian Hopkins (C, 420). GS is winning 14-5.
16: John Oldall (C, 22) shoots, blocked by Jackson Yang (7). GS up 14-7.
17: Shipley with a corner kick here. They’re trying to do a “box strategy.” John Oldall (C, 22) kicks, Alex Chen (4) gets it and kicks it up to Jackson Yang (7), then to Forest Ho-Chen (C, 69). Well, that was an absolute failure of a “box strategy.” Forest Ho-Chen passes it back to Ally Fu (8/3), who shoots, saved by Jason Alson (42), then fouled by Tikil Masak (C, 9) and replaced by Camellia Zheng (85). GS up 16-8.
18: Likoba Sachaliko (51) shoots, blocked by Adam Weng (-9/2). GS up 16-10.
19: Camellia Zheng (85) gets the ball, and passes it up to Wade Wang (60), who passed back to Linglong Dai (C, e+i*pi) who shoots, blocked by Sarah Alson (21). GS up 18-10.
20: Jessica Mah (80) shoots, blocked by Ian Hopkins (C, 420). GS up 18-12. Although George School is ahead right now, a lot can change in ten minutes. If you don’t believe me, just wait until May 6, 2022. It’s not like some students at one of these schools will get completely screwed over because of a removal of 10 minutes.
21: Yuri Tarded (C, 56) shoots, blocked by Linglong Dai (C, e+i*pi). GS up 18-14.
22: Linglong Dai (C, e+i*pi) shoots, blocked by Paul Momah (4). GS up 20-14.
23: Corner kick again, let’s see if George School can score this time. Shipley has their entire team back to try to defend four people. Linglong Dai (C, e+i*pi) kicks again, Yuki Wang (210) shoots but is blocked by Tikil Masak (C, 9). GS is winning 22-14.
Scoring: 1, 3, 5
24: Tikil Masak (C, 9) shoots, blocked by Ian Hopkins (C, 420). GS is winning 22-17. Ally Fu (8/3) subbed in for Camellia Zheng (85).
24: John Oldall (C, 22) shoots, blocked by Linglong Dai (C, e+i*pi) GS up 22-20.
25: DA-ni-ehl He-RIHD-vi (2) with the ball now, trying to get Shipley into the lead with a goal, ball stolen by Elie Koay (49). This is what happens when you use QSAian Traditional. Wait a minute. Elie passes up to Yuki Wang (210), over to MC Gu (10), back up to Yuki Wang (210), through ball past Likoba Sachaliko (51) and Sarah Alson (21) to Forest Ho-Chen (C, 69), Forest Ho-Chen cuts it back inside, and
Forest Ho-Chen (C, 69) SCORES, ASSISTED BY YUKI WANG (210). IT’S 27-20 (1-0) GEORGE SCHOOL!!! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLL!!!!! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLL!!!
Scoring: 0, 0, 1
26: Foul on Yuri Tarded (C, 56) from Linglong Dai (C, e+i*pi), Tikil Masak (C, 9) shoots a second penalty kick, but it’s high and wide. GS still winning 27-20.
Scoring: 1, 3, 5
27: Jessica Mah (80) with the ball, passes it outside to John Oldall (C, 22), cross to Yuri Tarded (C, 56), and it goes over the crossbar. Tikil Masak (C, 9) is yelling at the entire team.
28: DA-ni-ehl He-RIHD-vi (2) crosses into the box, looking to get it to Yuri Tarded (C, 56), handball is called, and the Shipley team is celebrating, thinking that they can get a third penalty kick and get back into the match, but it’s actually a handball on Shipley, so George School gets a free-kick. George School celebrates accordingly.
29: Linglong Dai (C, e+i*pi) kicks the ball to Wade Wang (60), back to MC Gu (10), and over to Jackson Yang (7) who shoots, blocked by Alcon Lemon (41).
Full time: GS WINS 30-20!!! AND GEORGE SCHOOL HAS STUNNED THE (PROBABLY) FORMER FRIENDS LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!!! SHIPLEY CAN’T BELIEVE IT, BUT GEORGE SCHOOL HAS HELD FIRM FOR THE WIN!!!
Senior captains Ian Hopkins (420) and Forest Ho-Chen (69) really starred in this match, and Forest Ho-Chen (69) is the player of the match, with Jackson Yang (7) as an honorable mention.
Results:
GS: 30 (8+6+6+5+5)
