GSVMT Winter Season

The George School Varsity Math Team has wrapped up a wonderful winter season, with successes in the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) and the Lehigh Contest. This continues our wonderful work in the Fall season.

First were the AMCs. GSVMT had 8 players qualify for the next round, the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME). These are as follows:

AMC 12

Wilson Chen’23

Forest Ho-Chen’22

Linglong Dai’23

Jimmy Ding’23

Yuki Wang’23

Ian Hopkins’22

AMC 10

MC Gu ‘24

Jackson Yang ‘25

Wilson Chen ‘23 was in the top 1% of all test takers, while Forest Ho-Chen ‘22, MC Gu ‘24, and Jackson Yang ‘25 were in the top 2.5% of all test takers. GSVMT members had some thoughts to share regarding the AMC results. Senior captain Forest Ho-Chen ‘22 said, "I think that our performance in the AMC was one of the greatest in the history of the George School Varsity Math Team (starting in 2019). In terms of qualifiers, this performance was only tied by the 2019-2020 GSVMT, which had two IMO students. I also think that this is a good sign that next year's team has what it takes to win the Philly League."

Scores against (comparisons to) other schools:

Pingry: 1(8)-1(7)

Episcopal Academy: 8-3

Hill: 8-2

Friends Central: 8-1

Shipley / Westtown / Haverford: No qualifiers

Lehigh Contest

George School Varsity Math Team also participated in the Lehigh Contest, which is the qualification test for the Lehigh Valley ARML team. Two students (Wilson Chen (5th overall) and Forest Ho-Chen (7th in senior grade) are on/tied for the first page of the contest result ranking. We also had two younger players Kevin Gong ‘25 and Ally Fu ‘24 from the team beating a varsity tournament player from Episcopal Academy. Shipley, Westtown, and Haverford were mysteriously missing again. Wilson beats rival Tiffany Wang from The Hill School and Forest beats rival Nick Zhu from Archmere Academy.

Forest Ho-Chen ‘22 said, "I think that the Varsity Math Team's success at the Lehigh Contest was a perfect ending to the Winter sports season, just like how the Varsity Math Team's Varsity Tournament Championship was a perfect ending to the Fall sports season. In both of these, we saw George School legends stay legends, but we also saw the emergence of some new potential stars, such as MC and Ally."

For the spring season, it appears that Wilson Chen '23 has qualified for USAMO. GSVMT will also participate in the Purple Comet competition, and some GSVMT members will participate in the Lehigh Valley ARML team. GSVMT will soon be joined by GSVST (Varsity Science, run by Forest Ho-Chen ‘22, Hamza Waseem ‘23, and Vinay Thulasiram ‘23) and GSVCT (Varsity Chess, run by Alspencer Omondi ‘22, Larry Vandyke ‘22, and Andrew Luisi ‘24).

GSVMT is very proud of our successful winter season. As Wilson Chen ‘23 said, “We had a really amazing season, everyone tried their best. All the coaches and sponsors are extremely supportive to our math team, allowing us to end this terrific season.”

Win over an undefeated team:

Boys Basketball: Beat St. Thomas Aquinas 60-48, they were previously 20-0.

GSVMT: Beat The Hill School 30-19, we think they were previously 8-0.

GSVMT still has the following records: Largest shutout (38-0), most wins against Westtown (3), most wins against Shipley (2, tied with Varsity Volleyball), most championships (2 or 5 depending on what you count as a championship), best record ration (17-2, 8.5), and win streak (11).
