Week Two of the Philly Varsity Math League:
Welcome to Week Two!
After an exciting kickoff week, the teams returned to action for another round of intense matches. Some teams were looking to maintain their momentum, while others aimed to bounce back after disappointing losses. Let’s see how they fared this time around.
In League 1's Match of the Week, the SCHA Blue Devils were set to face the Friends Central Phoenix, both teams coming off strong victories in the first week. Meanwhile, the defending Inter AC champions, The Haverford School Fords, take on the defending Inter AC D2 champions, the Penn Charter Quakers, in League 2's Match of the Week.
In other matches, The Hill School Rams face off against the Westtown Moose in a Varsity Tournament rematch. Over in another exciting rematch, the Episcopal Academy Churchmen will go head-to-head against the Gators, marking the third consecutive Week 2 clash between the two teams. Elsewhere, The Baldwin Bears clash with the Germantown Friends Tigers, and the Masterman Blue Dragons looked to improve against an Owls team still trying to find their groove.
Meanwhile, outside of the league, the George School Varsity Math Team Cougars take on Sydney High School in their first non-league match of the season. The Cougars are currently on a bye week.
Matches of the Week:
Blue Devils vs Phoenix: In one of the most competitive matchups of the season so far, the Blue Devils pulled off a perfect score of 40 points, narrowly edging out the Phoenix, who finished with 38. This match featured incredibly strong performances from both teams, but ultimately, the Blue Devils' precision and focus secured them the victory. This also breaks the record for most points scored by both teams in a PMVL match!
Fords vs Quakers: A 34-27 win puts the Penn Charter Quakers in a good position for the Inter AC.
Other matches:
Rams vs Moose: Another thrilling match ended with the Moose getting their revenge on the Rams, securing a 37-33 win. After falling short in the Varsity Tournament’s third-place match last season, the Moose were determined to come out on top this time.
Churchmen vs Gators: Once again, the Churchmen defeated the Gators in a Week 2 matchup, winning 36-28.
Bears vs Tigers: The Tigers showed why they are favorites to win the whole thing with a 35-32 win against a strong Bears team.
Blue Dragons vs Owls: The Owls pulled off a surprising victory over the Blue Dragons, winning 30-22. Despite being predicted to struggle this season, the Owls are proving to be a tougher opponent than expected.
Non-League Match:
Cougars vs Sydney High School: The Cougars somehow still managed to dominate Sydney High School, winning 37-18, despite one of their top prospects not playing. This marks the first time since 2021 that the Cougars have won their Math Madness opener.
Bye Week: The Cougars enjoyed their bye week from league play, using it to take on Sydney High School in the aforementioned non-league game.
Stay tuned for Week Three as the action continues in the Philly Varsity Math League!
