Why some football scores are easier to get than others
Some football scores are easier to get than others. The score 20-17 has happened more than 274 times in NFL history, while 32-26 (our score this year against Penn Charter) has never happened. This is because of the way that scoring works in football. Field goals are worth 3 points, and they are achieved by kicking the ball through the other team’s goalposts. Touchdowns are worth 6 points, and are achieved by getting the ball into the other team’s endzone. After a touchdown, there are two ways to get more points. The first way is that teams can kick the ball through the goalposts to get another point. This leaves the possible scorings in football to be 3, 6, and 7. This makes scores such as 1-0, 2-0, 11-0, etc. impossible. However, there is another way to get points after a touchdown. If the team puts the ball into the other team’s endzone again, then that is two points, making an eight point touchdown. This is much rarer than the 7 point touchdown. With the two point conversion, 11-0 is now a possible score, but 5-0 still isn’t possible. The third way to get points in football is to get a safety, which means that the ball carrier is tackled in their own end zone. These are worth 2 points. This allows everything except 1 to be possible in football. However, during an extra point attempt or a two point conversion attempt, if a safety occurs, then it is only 1 point. This allows scores like 6-1 and 8-1, but not 7-1. However, in order for this to happen, the offense has to have the ball in its end zone, which is on the other side of the field, and then get tacked there. As a result, 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 3-1, 4-1, 5-1, and 7-1 are not possible in football.Due to the way that football scoring works, some scores are easier to get than others. When a score happens that has never happened before, it is known as scorigami. Scorigamis usually require many touchdowns, a safety, or a two point conversion. In the Super Bowl XLVIII, the Seattle Seahawks beat the Denver Broncos 43-8, which had never happened before. Contributing to this were a safety in the opening seconds and a two point conversion by the Broncos. The most recent scorigami was when the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by a score of 25-11 on September 24, 2023. More information can be found here: https://nflscorigami.com.
